Yesterday @gendernation participated in a press co Yesterday @gendernation participated in a press conference with an incredible gathering of leadership from LAUSD all the way up to the California Department of Education, in which they formally accepted our donation of 7,000 LGBTQ+ affirming books. Thanks to everyone who supported this effort with your contributions or your time. Most of all, thanks to the tireless commitment of the district leadership, teachers, librarians, parents and caregivers who don’t stop advocating for our kids. Reaching one child is enough, reaching nearly a million is better. #representation #education #FAIRAct

Repost from @lausdhrde using repost_now_app - Toda Repost from @lausdhrde using repost_now_app - Today at Riverside Dr. Charter School, @gendernation and @lausdhrde (Human Relations Diversity and Equity) announced a very generous book donation in which Gender Nation donated more than 7,000 LGBTQ+ affirming books for all of LAUSD elementary school libraries! It is important to have these books for all of our students and families to be included in our curriculum as stated by CA Ed code, which requires that schools have content representative of the diverse identities we serve. There are lots of very famous quotes about how pro There are lots of very famous quotes about how progress can’t be accomplished alone. Here are just a few: “Teamwork makes the dream work”, “There’s no I in team”, “a pancake without syrup is just flat dough”…and over the last few months at Gender Nation, we’ve seen just how true this is. This year, nearly one million kids have more welcoming & loving schools to go to each day because of all of the people who have helped make it happen. From the activists throughout history who have worked for equality & representation, the law makers and reps who put forth legislation like The Fair Education Act, to the parents and caregivers who embrace the opportunity to love and reaffirm their kids, to the teachers, librarians & education administrators who foster the intellectual and spiritual growth of their students by creating inclusive spaces where all kids can feel like they belong, to the authors and storytellers who share their work with the world, to the incredibly generous people who donate to us so that we can gift those stories to our already overburdened public schools, and most of all - to the kids we know who are out there in every home, every school, and every town in this country, bravely trying to discover who they are. Thank you. We are proud to be part of your team.
Woo hoo! We are happy to announce that @jennifercg Woo hoo! We are happy to announce that @jennifercgrant is the newest member of @gendernation’s board. Jennifer has been a generous supporter from the beginning, repeatedly offering her time, resources & literary expertise. We are starting Thanksgiving this year with a big Thank You to Jen! Here’s to doing great work together ahead! A note from Jen: I'm excited to serve on Gender Nation's board! A bit about me: I'm the mother of four young adult children, and my husband and I are recent empty nesters. We live with our rescue dog, Scarlett, in the Bucktown/Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. I'm a lifelong Episcopalian, and I'm happy to say that my kids were raised in a faith community that fully celebrates LGBTQ+ folks. (Our church was featured in Teen Vogue a few years ago and named one of the "most awesome" in the country for its LGBTQ+ inclusivity and focus on social justice.) I wanted to work with Gender Nation because I want all children to flourish; when we stand up for one person's dignity and humanity, we are standing up for every person! I also care deeply about children's literature and have written several books for kids, including Maybe God Is Like That Too (which won a number of awards for excellence in children's literature) and Once Upon a Time Not So Long Ago, a new picture book about the pandemic. You can learn more about me at jennifergrant.com. Happy to meet you! Link about my church: Link about my church: https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/illinois-most-awesome-church/135551/

Keith Allen Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1 Keith Allen Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990)

Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist. He loved drawing cartoons, and his drawings of babies, dogs, and spaceships were in his own unique style. When he was 20 years old, he moved to New York City where he was part of the LGBTQ+ community. (Also living in NYC at that time were other amazing artists, including Andy Warhol!)

At first Keith made his drawings in chalk on the walls of the subway, but in time he began showing his work in art galleries. When people bought his art, he often donated the money they gave him to organizations that helped children or people who were sick. People loved his artwork so much that they paid huge amounts to own it, but Keith wanted everyone to be able to buy his work, so he put images of his work on posters and T-shirts and sold them cheaply.

Keith became ill with a disease called AIDS, but before he died, he founded The Keith Haring Foundation to fund AIDS research and to help kids in need.

In 2019, Haring was one of the first 50 American "pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes" inducted on the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor within the Stonewall National Monument in New York City.

Gender Nation thanks and salutes our heroes during LGBTQ+ History Month. Learn more about us at gendernation.org.
